The Garnet Valley Walk
Travel into the remarkable landscape of El Hoyazo, near Níjar, and discover a valley created by volcanic activity millions of years ago. The walk follows the Barranco del Hoyazo, also known as the Rambla de las Granatillas, towards an ancient crater environment where erosion has exposed colourful rocks, fossils and tiny garnets.
As you walk, your guide will explain how this unusual landscape was formed and why garnets and cordierite — sometimes known locally as sapphires — can be seen among the volcanic material. The route also reveals traces of the area’s mineral history: garnet-rich deposits were once worked commercially and used to produce abrasive materials.
The path passes through dry, open terrain with impressive views across the crater and surrounding countryside. Some sections are uneven, eroded and occasionally steep, so suitable walking shoes and reasonable mobility are required. Please enjoy the minerals where they naturally occur: garnets, rocks and fossils should be observed and photographed, not removed.
